Paper cutting is an art form that involves using scissors or knives to cut patterns into paper to create designs with a hollowed-out effect. It is a traditional Chinese folk art. Here is a detailed introduction to it:

Historical Development
Origin: The prototype of paper cutting can be traced back to ancient times, when primitive people used animal teeth, shells, and other tools for carving and drilling. Later, the ancients carved patterns on pottery and bone tools, employing hollowing techniques. During the Han Dynasty, people used thin materials such as gold foil and leather, making decorations through carving and hollowing techniques, laying the foundation for the formation of paper cutting.
Formation: From the Western Han to the Jin Dynasty was the period when paper cutting art took shape. In the Western Han, Cai Lun invented papermaking, and people transferred carving and cutting techniques onto paper. During the Jin Dynasty, paper cutting was used for the "Renri Festival". The earliest discovered paper cutting artifacts date back to the Southern and Northern Dynasties period and are floral pattern paper cuttings.
